Linebacker Drills to Improve Speed and Agility For Football
In football, playing linebacker requires a lot in order to play the position at a high level. Linebackers have to be able to fight off blockers to stop the run, cover tight ends and receivers in the passing game, and rush the quarterback in order to make a sack.
Overall, linebackers are the leaders of the defense and need to be the most athletic players on defense.
Linebackers need to make sure the defensive lineman are lined up in the right gaps for run support, communicate with the defensive backs so they know what coverage to play in the backend, and need to make their pre-snap reads to understand what the offense might be trying to do against them.
That’s why it’s extremely important for linebackers to have high football IQ in order to read and react quickly. Any delay on the snap of the ball or a misread while reading keys can result in a big play for the offense. You need to be able to react to a run or pass play immediately upon the snap of the football.
That’s why as a linebacker, you need to work on your explosiveness, speed, and agility in the offseason so you’re prepared come gameday.
